Bull Kelp (Nereocystis lutkeana) is the king of the vegetative water world here in the Pacific Northwest. Found in thick forests along our island's rocky shores its average growth rate is 4 inches a day. What many people don't realize is that Bull Kelp is also a delicious and nutritious sea-food. Use this salt to add "merroir" (like terroir for the sea) to any dish.

We source our bull kelp from a very cool small family business in British Columbia (Canada) called BC Kelp. The business is run by a lovely young couple and they wild harvest all different sorts of seaweed in a sustainable manner from the cold clean waters of the Queen Charlotte islands. In fact, they learned their trade studying under the legendary wild plant guru Ryan Drum of Waldron Island.

My favorite thing to put on fresh fish before baking, frying, or grilling. The salt brings out the natural flavors while the kelp adds an umami taste. For an added benefit season fish before cooking with the Friday Harbor Blend and then season the finished product on the table with the bull kelp sea salt!

THE BEST

I take this salt with me all over the world. It is a great seasoning and adds depth to anything I use it on: salad, meat, veggies. Truly I don't leave home without it

Sea salt with flavor of aonori (green laver seaweed)

Recommend using in traditional Japanese recipes using aonori. Delicious with tempura, okonomiyaki, yaki soba, yaki udon, takoyaki, rice balls. The list goes on and on. Just remember to adjust the amount of other seasonings since you are adding salt. In the case of tempura, you may be able to skip the sauce if you use this salt.
